Dear Participant,
I an very much looking forward to working with you at the October AISA Conference in Johannesburg. My goal for the 2 days in for it to be practical, useful and also fun!
I am writing to give you some information about how we will be working together and details of materials it would be helpful to think about, prior to the session and to bring with you to the seminar.
This professional development seminar will support your ability to initiate or extend adult professional collaboration in your school and virtually by developing and sustaining a Professional Learning Community Group. The Critical Friends Group model is the basis of the work. Begun in the fall of 1995 at the Annenberg Institute at Brown University, the program is focused on developing collaborative school communities, encouraging reflective practice, and rethinking leadership - all in support of increased student achievement.
The program helps educators create what Stanford's Milbrey McLaughlin calls "learning communities" in their settings, where practitioners collaborate to deepen their knowledge of subject matter, examine their teaching practice with a critical eye, and consider issues of organizational change that support improved classroom practice. The program emphasizes making one's practice public, continuously assessing teaching in relation to student learning, and routinely adapting teaching practices and school structures to meet the changing needs of today's students.
During the seminar, you will learn how educators, in collaboration with colleagues, can improve student learning. We will be learning by doing substantive work together which you to bring to the session. Additionally you will prepare to adapt and translate your experience to group work you will do during the school year either within your school or with colleagues virtually. To this end, you will work to develop a professional community while learning the concepts, habits, tools, and skills that lead to more reflective practice.
In preparation for the institute I would like you to complete the following tasks.
1. Read the article " Getting to NO" link http://www.nais.org/Magazines-Newsletters/ISMagazine/Pages/Getting-To-No.aspx and bring it in paper form or on your computer on our first day.
2. Think about a success story from your past teaching or practice that you would be willing to share with your colleagues, this should be something you are proud has been accomplished, it can be a success with a specific student or with a lesson or unit you teach, it can be a small victory or a bigger accomplishment.
3. Bring "work in progress" that would benefit from other eyes. This can be adult work such as drafts of letters, handbook, plans or student work, which you feel has room for improvement and about which you are wondering how to proceed. You can bring several pieces of the work of one student or examples of the work of several students. Data is also appropriate to bring if you have survey results or student assessment information you would like help making sense of and deciding how to proceed.
4. Think about an issue or dilemma you are currently dealing with which you would be willing to share with the group. This can be a student issue, parent issue or school issue, which needs to be resolved or acted on.
I will bring the structures and formats to deal with sharing successes, resolving dilemmas and looking collaboratively at student work however for this 2 day session to be really significant I need YOU to bring AUTHENTIC WORK to the table. So please consider the 4 tasks above and take a little time to come prepared. Thank you.
I believe you will find our time together thought provoking and fun. It will be interactive; you will be moving and working in varied groupings. My hope is that you will find practical and useful tools to incorporate into your work with your colleagues and that you will feel your time has been very well spe
